Supporters of deputy president William Ruto in Trans Nzoia have condemned the replacement of General Service Unit (GSU) officers manning his official residence with administration police officers (APs).
They termed the change as a well schemed strategy by President Uhuru Kenyatta aimed at frustrating DP Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid by belittling his office with an intention to settle political scores.
“We are calling on President Uhuru Kenyatta to restore the security officers that were taken away from the office if the deputy president. He needs an elite security team to guard him,” said Saboti ward MCA aspirant Luke Naibei.
They also cautioned President Kenyatta against making rushed decisions with an aim of punishing the deputy president politically saying he is creating a recipe for chaos since the move has political implications
“The president should not personalize his differences with the deputy president. He should desist from raising unnecessary political temperatures at this time when we are close to the general elections,” said peace crusader Mr. Ferdinand Wanyisia.
They also called on the president to stop influencing the political affairs in the country and instead urged him to leave choices to Kenyans to choose a leader who will succeed him when he retires
“The deputy president should be accorded the respect he deserves since he is a key figure in government judging by the position he holds his political ambition” said Kwanza parliamentary aspirant Nicholas Wamalwa.
Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai defended the withdrawal of General Service Unit (GSU) officers saying Ruto still maintains close protection from the elite Presidential Escort.
“This is a normal re-assignment of duties within the National Police Service to enhance efficiency and effectiveness….the Presidential Escort Unit continues to provide close protection security to the Deputy President,” ,” Mutyambai said.
