A housing and population census committee has been set up in Trans Nzoia County to kick start preparations for the exercise which will take place on the nights of August 24 and August 25 with a target of about 1 million residents.

Area county commissioner Samson Ojwang’ will chair the committee that also brings on board the county’s statistics officials, the county secretary and the five deputy county commissioners.

“Advertisements will be made public very soon to recruit enumerators. We therefore warn the general public to ignore hoax advertisements doing rounds on social media purportedly seeking to recruit interested applicants,” said Mr. Ojwang.

The county commissioner further said the census exercise will be different from the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS) exercise since it will focus more on generating comprehensive socio-economic demographics.

“The assumption that those who were enlisted for the Huduma Namba exercise can ignore the census exercise is a misleading one since the focus is now beyond the numbers but economic planning,” he said.

Kenya National Bureau of statistics’ senior manager Benjamin Avusevwa said harmonization of the data will be carried out up to August 31 upon which the results will be made public to the citizens.

“The main goal of the census is to generate data that will help the government to effectively plan for the country at both national and county government levels. This is very critical,” said Mr.  Avusevwa

The 2019 Census will be administered using computer aided personal interviewing (CAPI) technique. A tablet will be used to capture the information directly for better accuracy and faster processing of the data.
